Do you feel down or oversleep once the winter months start?
This could all be caused by a shortage of Melatonin. Melatonin is a hormone that is involved in regulating the body's circadian rhythms (the body's natural hormone secretion) as well as the sleep/wake cycle. Since Melatonin is stimulated by darkness and suppressed by light, it becomes increasingly difficult for your body to suppress it during the progressively dark winter days, sending your body's hormone production into a state of unbalance. The same effect can be seen when dealing with jet lag.
Poor sleep patterns or trouble getting to sleep also point to an imbalance in Melatonin levels. If your body doesn't produce the correct amount of Melatonin when it's time for sleep, you could be awake for hours and after finally falling asleep, wake up tired the next day.
The answer to all these problems could be a prescription drug but many of those have nasty side effects and don't even work!
Don't want to try taking dangerous sleep drugs?
Melatonin is a wonderful all natural, non-addictive supplement that is available over the counter and balances your body. It helps establish proper sleep cycles so that you can fall asleep fast and be alert the next day. Whether you have insomnia, are a shift worker, have jet lag or SAD (Seasonal Affect Disorder), Melatonin promotes positive sleep cycles and helps you have the sleep you need.
Stop with the "silly" rituals that only keep you laying in bed longer and look at how Melatonin can fit your needs:
Insomnia:
• Use between late afternoon and bedtime.
• Melatonin plays an important role in the induction of sleep.
• Several double-blind trials have shown melatonin supplementation to be very effective in promoting sleep.
• Low melatonin secretion at night are thought to be an extremely common cause of insomnia in the elderly, while in younger individuals this is less of a factor.
Shift Workers:
• Melatonin may help shift workers adjust to new sleep patterns when shifts are changing.
Jet Lag:
• Use during and for 5 days after travel that crosses time lines.
• Several double-blind studies have shown 3 to 5 mg of melatonin to be very effective in relieving jet lag.
Seasonal Affect Disorder:
• Melatonin supplementation may improve SAD because it not only increases brain melatonin levels, but also because it may suppress cortisol secretion.
